It's been just over a month since NYE but we are looking back at some of the highlights of 2017 for us Nomadic Creatives.
The fabulous thing about New Year’s Resolutions is that you can make as many of them as you want, about as many different aspects of your life as you can think of. This year, at Nomadic Creatives, we decided to make our New Year’s Resolution to see as much of the world as possible, both personally and professionally.
Travel is something we are passionate about. We truly believe that travel broadens the mind and expanding your horizons is always a good thing. Our business has already taken us to some amazing places. From Norwich to Miami, the world is our oyster! Last year we filmed in Miami, Belgrade, Paris, Belgium, Berlin, Hanberg, Leicester, Gloucestershire, Norfolk, Cheshire, Manchester and London to name a few.
I interviewed Tom Cribbin (pictured above), our international videographer, about his work in 2017. I asked him what the highlight was of his filming projects last year:
“I spent a week out in Miami with Tom Farmery from The Film Farmers working with a global brand filming a documentary-style product launch video. I used our newly acquired Panasonic GH5 as it was incredibly lightweight, which is fabulous for filming abroad, has fantastic image quality and is one of the few cameras which shoots broadcast standard 4k video.
My role on this shoot was to gather dynamic B-roll and cut away shots and behind the scenes shoes while the client was talking to camera. I used a mixture of handheld and Gimbal work to capture smooth footage. The client was a group of three business owners who have seen enormous success creating an online animation service. Our job was to film them talking to camera as they travelled the world to show off the scale of their product and how it has grown. One highlight of the trip was visiting the famous enigmatic Dream Asylum Studios in Miami where the likes of Justin Timberlake, Jessie J, Gwen Stefani and many more recorded their most famous albums.”

I also asked Tom why the project was so enjoyable:
“Miami is a beautiful place, you can point your camera almost anywhere and it looks great! Miami beach is a mad place full of the most incredible cars, fashion and food. It was a great experience to film and travel, doing the two things that I love to do!”
Then I asked him what he learned on this shoot.
“The Miami shoot was part three of a larger, four-part project and it was the first time I had worked on a project that was being filmed in four countries, over two months. I learned that preparation is key and that you have to think on your feet during shoots like this. There was a small team with two videographers and one sound recordist operating a boom mic throughout the shoot. Packing small and light helped a lot as the filming locations massively varied.”
As creative nomads we get to work with both local and global brands on exciting corporate video and writing projects all the time, but what really makes our work so spectacular is when we get to combine our love of travelling with our passion for writing and filming. We are booking in some incredible projects already this year in some far-flung corners of the world (not to mention the UK!) and we are really pushing ourselves to step outside our comfort zones by investing in new and exciting kit to capture better video than ever before.
We hope this inspires you to get out there and get living. You only get one chance; carpe diem!
