Say Hello to Crispin!

A note from Crispin:

Joining Nomadic Creatives was a big jump for me.

In this industry it’s often a very hard choice between being a freelancer, or being part of a bigger team. Coming from a much more freelance background, especially in Covid times, I felt like the right choice was to find a production company that I respected and liked enough to join.

I have been working at Nomadic for a few months now, so I know there is simply nowhere else that would have been a better fit for me. As soon as I met Tom & Amy to chat about the role, I felt very warmly welcomed, which I instantly valued. During the interview, I saw some of the projects that they took on and the BTS showing what Nomadic get up to and it was the exact sort of thing I wanted to get stuck into. I saw that I would be able to develop my skills and have fun at the same time.

In that first chat I was told that the aspirations of the company are forever increasing, which was a very refreshing approach. I have found with some companies that there is a great deal of complacency in the clients they have and the size of the projects that they take on whereas Nomadic was limitless! With no limit to the size and scale of their productions and the exponential growth of their company, I decided that the role at Nomadic was the one for me, and luckily, I won the role!

I was asked which specific roles I usually take on and what I would like to specialise in as the job role was for a videographer which is quite open ended title. But the majority of my freelance life was as a gaffer as well DOP. It’s what I love most on set. This has been accommodated to so well, nearly all shoots I am now lighting. This has allowed me to go down that avenue and improve on the parts that I want to specialise in. It has been great for me and I have been learning more and more on each shoot we’ve been on. Recent shoots for XLN and Icon at The O2 are up there with the biggest jobs I’ve ever worked on. I was able to work with even more experienced gaffers on both shoots, learning from them and cultivating my skillset, opportunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

The freedom I am given is also fantastic. The Christmas social post we did is a perfect example of this. I pitched to Tom the idea of having some sort of “fun” Christmas challenge video for our social media that would help marketing and engagement with branding. Tom said to me, ‘I trust you, you go do it and let me know what I need to do’. With me leading the way, we created a really fun short video that looked great and is currently our best performing social post.

Tom is such an incredible director and DOP and has taught me so much. I am always so impressed by his detailed technical knowledge. He knows so much about cameras, tech, and business in general. I’ve picked up so many bits and bobs of knowledge over the last few months that I now find myself using daily.

I also feel we have such a great relationship, especially coming on set because I understand his visions (most of the time :-D ) and can collaborate with him on these to figure out how we can create an amazing final project.

I am currently in the process of piecing together the latest draft of our showreel, which allows me to reflect on all the projects we’ve got worked on over the last few months and even ones that were before my time at Nomadic. Every time I watch it, it makes me so proud of myself and of being part of such a great team. The time I have worked with Amy has always made me a lot calmer with the productions, the organisation and management of large groups of people is something I could never do! As she is currently on maternity leave, I haven’t had as much opportunity to work side by side yet, but as she is soon due to return, I am excited to get back into productions with Amy on set.

I am looking forward to seeing what the rest of 2022 has to offer and developing my career and skills at Nomadic Creatives.
